Find out if there is a 'secondary market' for these policies. For some insurance policies (eg Endowments) investors are willing to pay more for them than the surrender value -- not sure if anyone would want yours, but maybe someone on the board will know for sure.

It's too small and unlikely to pay a terminal bonus, so there won't be a secondary market.

I'm quite encouraged that you only stand to lose about 4% of your money.

We need to know the guaranteed sum assured on maturity to be able to give you any guidance of value. This would be in the original documents when you started the policy.

  • In 2002 I purchased a Carol Smillie Bonus Cash Builder policy with Axa Sun Life. So far I have paid in approx £2,196. I am told if i cash it in i will only get aout £700 back. I have received bonuses of £400 to-date. It matures in 2017. Should I cash it in as after reading many bad reviews I am loathe to plough any more of my hard earned cash into it? Many thanks for any help here.
  • I also took out a policy some 7 yrs ago. currently pay in £100 a month. The current surrender value is £6054 + £258 interim bonus?????. I have paid in some £6600

My gauranteed cash sum is £11070, and my compound bonus is currently £1796. I was given a projection at 4% of £15900. Policy would mature 26/02/2014.

I think I read somewhere that when interest rates are rising these policies tend to do better. Is this really the case? or should I cut my losses and be thankful I am getting something back
  • Are these policies not worth holiding on to ? I have been paying 60 for 3 years and mh has been paying 100 in for 4 years would it be best for us to quit ???
  • I have found it very interesting to read all the notes regarding Axa Sun Life Bonus cashbuilder plan.

Does anyone have any advice on my situation or has perhaps been in my predicament?

I currently have an Axa Sun Life Bonus cashbuilder plan and have been paying into it the minimal amounts since October 1999, I really need the cash now so I have decided to surrender the policy. On contacting Axa Sun Life yesterday for a surrender value they have quoted me £400 less than the amount of capital I have paid in to it !! How can this be possible, can they charge so much in admin fees? There is no word of these excessive charges in the original policy.

Can anyone advise on this as I have not cashed it in as yet but do not want to lose £400.

    Thanks

These types of plans had been round for 30-40 years without much change and the charges are typical from that era.

Yes they were. AXA made these charges quite clear in their documentation.
