Joint Account - Which Account?

Hi,
On the very few posts I've submitted before you guys have given me some great advice. Got a bit of a complicated one (for me), I've done a search on the forum and whilst the existing threads are useful, none of them answer my concerns 100%.
I'm moving into a new place with my girlfriend and would like to set-up a joint account in order to pay the bills together. As we are renting, we will transfer money in from our seperate accounts and then direct debit will take out the utility bills, council tax and the rent as and when. Given that we would put more money in than we need, what would be the best account, in terms of interest, to use in this scenario, it is highly unlikely we will go overdrawn and would not require a debit card? Could this be covered by savings accounts that do direct debits out of the account (are there such things?)?
That was scenario 1. Scenario 2, would be the same but we would be paying food bills from the joint account too, and would therefore have a bit more 'spare' cash in the account to cover eventualities. However, debit cards would be required to do this. So what would be the best account with debit cards?
I have looked at the 'best current account' section on this site but again it doesn't really give the joint account perspective I was looking for. However, if the A&L Premier Plus account can cover either or both, then that seems ideal. Hopefully there would be some way of claiming the the sign-up bonus too :j
