A friend of mine was asking me for advice on becoming a childminder, and one of the things that came up was whether she would be allowed to as she is in a rented property. She won't ask her present landlord as he is vile so she is moving, but does anyone know if this is likely to cause any problems? I own my house, so this…

Problem may be with landlord's insurance .. mine (NLA, probably standard wording.. ) has..

Premises named in the Schedule which are used for domestic purposes.

Running a child-minding business isn't domestic purposes (whilst, say, working at home, no other people in or alternations needed, 1 day a week might be..

Ah, you say, this doesn't matter the insurance company will never find out...

OK: So when the place burns down, 3 kids are maimed, etc etc & insurer doesn't pay out for building or contents or kids... are you still happy??

I'd not touch it with a barge pole...
