I've just upgraded to Flash 9 and now my BBC Ticker won't show. It could be a coincidence - but I don't think so!

Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution?

The BBC Alerts icon shows in the icon tray and there is a BBC Ticker button on the bottom of the screen - but no ticker running.

I've rebooted the PC and reloaded the Ticker, but all to no avail.

Help!!!

I get the same result under XP and Flash 9.

I reported this to the company that develops the BBC Alerts news ticker - Skinkers. They responded to me that they were aware of flash-related issues, and:

"We are currently in the process of updating the BBC application and will be releasing an update within the next week or two."

So hold tight for a couple of weeks, then see if they've released an updated version. Since Flash 9 has been around for a while now, they should have got it fixed well before now!

    Yep, I'm on XP too.

So it's not just me then! I went through several forums and couldn't find anyone with this problem.

Must be only certain setups that have the problem though. I've got the latest version of Flash player on XP and never had a problem with the BBC ticker.

For anyone else experiencing this problem, I've just had the following response from the software creators....

    <<<Thank you for your email.

The issue you are experiencing is due to Flash conflicting with the BBC application

You will be glad to hear we have fixed this issue and have recently sent it across to the BBC for approval. Once this has been approved, they will upload it on to their website

Unfortunately we are unable to give you a time for when this will happen although as soon as this is available, we will email you the link.

    Kind regards

  • I just got notified by Skinkers that the new BBC News Alert application has been released. It's available here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/help/4735697.stm

Sure enough, this now works on my XP system with Flash 9.0.115.0 installed.

If anyone from Skinkers is reading this - well done chaps, and also good job on keeping users informed :-)

...and so say all of us!!
  • I installed BBC alerts. It was unresponsive on start-up (just a blank white box on the screen, and no response to any controls). I uninstalled (using Control Panel, because the 'uninstall' menu item was similarly broken).

I cleared out my old flash player and installed fresh 9.0.124.0 from adobe. Despite this, attempts to install the latest BBC Alerts (I deleted the old one a long time ago) produce: a) a message saying that I needed at least flash player 8; b) an offer to install flash player 9; and c) a monologue box telling me that the version BBC Alerts was trying to install was not the latest one and directing me (back) to the https://www.adobe.com site. Not having succeeded in installing the BBC Alerts software (and being unable to do so), I'm stuck. FWIW, I'm running Firefox 3 on XP Pro SP2.

    Cheers,

    J.
  • I have the same problem. I emailed Skinkers and it seems there is a incompatibility with Real Player which can cause this problem. They are fixing this in the next release due in a couple of weeks time. Or you can (it seems) uninstall both programs, and reinstall BBC Alerts to fix the problem. If you still need Real Player, there is the Real Player Alternative.

I have decided to wait for the new version.
