Sent you a pm with some suggestions - hope you got it..
  • thanks guys its been a good learning experience some more advice on shifting to cardiff will be appreciated
    thanks
  • We moved to Cardiff about 18 months ago and i must say it is a very cosmopolitan city- there's a bit of everything here and it's definately got a slower pace than Bristol. i would definately agree with other posters here- rent the house out and it would (just about) cover renting a house here.
Again i'm not sure about catchment areas for schools but i have been working in schools in and around Cardiff and they seem very happy, a lot of emphasis placed on arts/music/drama seems to make for happy kids.
I would suggest not looking for anywhere directly in the centre as it can get very hectic- we were there for a year but now are 2 miles out and it is still accessible for everything we need (public transport is good in Cardiff and not too bad to drive as long as you avoid major routes at rush hour).
If you look at a map of Cardiff you'll notice a lot of greenery - it's a very pretty place with a lot of emphasis placed on nice public spaces (parks etc).
There's also a lot of free stuff to explore with your kids- all museums and galleries in Wales are free and there's so much to see it'll take you a year of weekends to do it all in before you've spent a penny!
Language is nothing to be worried about either- everyone speaks english but you may find yourself wanting to pick up welsh- i have (although i do think there should be free welsh classes like learn direct seeing as all of our bills and correspondence come in bi-lingual formats). Sometimes there are jobs that are only advertised in welsh as they are welsh-speaking only companies.
My only disclaimer would be that you may need to have a sense of humour about 'nationality' - i have experienced quite a bit of (good natured!) ribbing about being english but i think if you are willing to integrate (as with any new city) you'll fit in fine.
Hope you find this helpful- i would wholeheartedly recommend Cardiff- why not come up for a day to experience it? it's not much on the train/far in the car and it will give you a really good idea of what the place is like!
good luck to you and family!
... and whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should ...

    Hiya,

I worked in Cardiff for a year for a youth charity, and the schools seem to be perfectly fine compared to some of the other places I've worked. As other posters have mentioned Cardiff has a lot to offer and is generally a fairly friendly city. Language shouldn't be a problem, there's only a tiny minority of those who speak Welsh that are so anti-English that they would have a problem speaking English with you.

One tip though - just because they're speaking Welsh doesn't mean they're being offensive about you. ;)

    hi guys
i wanted some help. we live in bristol and my husband has got a job offer from cardiff we are very confused as we should shift to cardiff or stay in bristol.the reason being our children go to descent schools in bristol we have our own property to live.
No ideas about life in cardiff?
    schools ? houses ? language
will it be difficult for us to shift back to england as my husband s job is only for 3-4 yrs

my children go to secondary schools will it be difficult for them to get admission to england universities?
thanks for the advice in advance

please no offence to any one we really dont know any thing about life in wales cardiff

There are plus points of living in wales like free prescriptions , schools in the cardiff area are not too bad either. Will not have any problems with the language really in South wales not as prevelant as North and mid wales. Places like the Gower , Mc Arther glen designer outlet in bridgend and a new viberant Swansea less than a hour away too. And if you are going to uni in wales you get the ALG too which you dont pay back. There is a lot more support for Welsh students over the english counterparts.Cardiff is a less hectic city with a vast array or shops and also cardiff bay is burgeoning too.

Perhaps your OH could stay in a B&B 4 nights a week for the first month, get a feel for the town and not over-tire himself with the commute while he settles into the new job.

I stayed at a cheap B&B/hotel on Newport Road that was doable. Parking at the rear, good brekky. £30/night. Bearing in mind the petrol for a 90 mile round trip (maybe more depending where you are) would cost over £10 per day, then £5 for the bridge. Car running cost for that distance is probably £10/day too. Saving on the time/stress of the commute, fears of breakdown. £30/night doesn't seem too shabby.

It was called The Cardiff Hotel, 138 Newport Road, Cardiff. 15 minutes walk into town, bus stop outside.

Rooms were very dated, think flock wallpaper and over-patterned carpets. But I managed to strike lucky and got given a triple room en-suite. Family run, really welcoming people.

Alternatively, there's one of those modern things where you pay per room (up to 3 people in it so you could stay too sometimes maybe) (probably no breakfast) called etap £32/night fixed fee
