  • Thanks horsepills. I've got a PC but no nothing about laptops. I'll check out Tesco and see what they've got.
    If I had known then what I know now . . .

  • Highland_Lass - you might have already seen this, but Tesco direct have a great Acer Laptop for just £269.99 at the moment - £30 off its original price. Details here.
  • Thanks, did see that one. Was thinking it would be good to have one with a card reader for her digital camera. It hasn't.

Easier to leave the card in the camera and connect it to the computer with a USB lead. If the camera has a "mass storage device" mode then it will look to the computer exactly like the card it contains; if not, you'll need to install drivers that come with the camera.

  • Thanks for all the help so far. Another question.:embarasse What else will she need to buy to connect to the internet. Don't think it will really be worth signing up for broadband as I don't think she'll use it enough to warrant that.

  • Most laptops come with a wireless card to allow you to connect to the internet, but you will need an internet connection of some kind. If you don't want broadband there are a few dialup providers offering pay as you go for around 4p per minute.

You might wanna post any further techie questions in another forum though ;)

You can always see if anybody living near you has an open broadband account. Not that this is strictly legal...

I wouldn't advocate stealing someone else's bandwidth! Apart from being illegal, it's unethical too. Would you like a stranger preventing you from accessing the grabbits board cos he's busy downloading movies on the connection you're paying for?!!

with a laptop of that spec I doubt you'd get a connection lol. Seriously it is illegal. Don't do it, it's not nice.

I'm sure you meant it as a joke, nat2607, but in case anyone takes you literally, there is unlikely to be any difference between this laptop's wifi performance and any other's.
