Positives from a Negative

My only CC is a Vanquis (£500limit), which I pay off in full each month. I paid it off last Saturday (£488) and haven't used it since. Then yesterday (Friday) I get a call at work from Vanquis, who were checking a transaction on my card.
"Have you spent £40 with Vodafone this morning Sir"
"No, I haven't used my card since I paid it off on Saturday"
"Oh"
She then reeled off about 8 transactions this week, all internet-based, and all of which I had nothing to do with.
Whoever was using my details had tried to buy a large item at Tesco Direct which was over my limit, was declined, and alerted Vanquis. This was all preceded with the usual "£2 Breast Cancer Care donation" I've seen elsewhere on MSE is common with fraudulent activity.

Vanquis asked where I'd used my card online - Tesco Direct and PayPal are the only two recently (although I'm aware details can be held for months)

Without any further ado, she cancelled my card and said I'd get a totally new account, card and PIN within 7days.

So, back to the title:
NEGATIVES
- Fraud on my card
- Being without £500 for a week (yes I know I shouldn't rely on my card!)
- The way that Vanquis didn't seem overly concerned (she almost sounded bored of dealing with it!) and just accepted it.

POSITIVES
- Vanquis were quick to pick up on this, and seem to be doing their best to make sure it's not too much inconvenience to me.

I know Vanquis get battered quite a lot on here, but I just wanted to share that they aren't all bad, and in this particular instance I think they've done a great job (so far)

I've read a lot about CC fraud lately (thanks to MSEs) and am a little concerned for the future of CCs if the companies aren't particularly bothered about CC fraud and seem to accept it's part of life.
I'd like to think that 'behind the scenes' things are being done to try to address this - surely the CC companies cannot go on losing all this money? (I heard recently they don't investigate anything under £10,000 - not sure if that's true but shocking if it is!)

Anyway, thanks for reading, rant over!

I had the same with Barclaycard last month. They seem to be using some new software that triggers unusual spending.

I think the banks have to do that with all the lost "data" out there.

But yes they do sound bored of it.

But one last tip: Call Vanquish and ask them to verify that you were called by them. Use the number on your statements to call them. There are so many scams going, one has to be careful and double check, as they called you.
