Is it me or are Npower really expensive

Hi Guys.

Just got my gas statement and OMG I owe a fortune again!

I am duel fuel with Npower,

3 bed semi
heating on from 6am-8am then 3pm -12midnight
gas hobs
electric cooker
average gas boiler-heats water as and when, i.e no tank

gas bill from 24th nov till 8th Jan = £109.45

Is this roughly what I should expect?

If anyone could give me a comparison I'd be really grateful, as I'd like to be well researched before I phone them.

Thanks

The only meaningful comparison is to use the price per kWh of gas.

There will be 2 prices - the higher one for the first xx units in a quarter and then a lower price for the rest.

Also I believe Npower charge different rates for different parts of the countryy.

    Thanks Cardew.

I'll post the figures later when I have more time.

Npower introduced regional gas billing recently per Cardew's post.

Most of it will be based on the old arrangement though as I think it came in around 04/01/2008.

I just had my bill this morning for same time frame & it was £70 - same style house, cooker, boiler etc.

My heating is 6.30 - 8.30 3 - 10. Do you need the heating on until midnight? We dont go to bed before 11pm & the heating going off at 10 is fine. If we feel chilly then we take a cuppa to bed & watch tv in bed! Reducing the heating even by an hour a day will make a saving.

Plus have you got your cavity walls done & your loft well insulated? Every little helps!

    Hope this info helps you.

At last, got a spare 5 minutes!

I have to admit that I find Npower's utility bills to be the most confusing I have ever had but this is how mine reads................

    24th Nov - 4th Jan = 3326kWh broken down into..
    first 1173 at 4.412p = £51.75
    next 2153 at 1.915p = £41.23

    4th Jan - 8th Jan = 342kWh broken down into..
    first 114 at 5.286p = £6.03
    next 228 at 2.294p = £5.23

    Add on VAT £5.21

    Total charge £109.45
    Total kWh used 3668

What I'd like to know is, am I using too much or are my charges more than average.

    Any info would be great.

    Thanks guys

Must admit, we probably don't need the heating on past 11pm. In fact I'll go and change the timer now.

    DONE:D

Not sure about the cavity walls in the original part of the house, but we have definately got them insulated in the extension and we had our loft converted 18months ago and that is now very well insulated.

    Thanks for your input.

What was Npower's reasoning behind charging different parts of the country different prices?

Your prices per kWh are about what you would expect to pay. You might get a little cheaper if you shop around - but not a lot(bearing in mind some tariffs have yet to increase)

Most companies charge 2 different rates, high for XX units per quarter and a lower rate for the rest.

The reason your rates changed on 4th Jan was because NPower raised their prices.

You have used 3,668kWh in 45 days which works out at £17 a week. For mid-winter that is on the high side for a 3 bed semi, but not excessive. Plenty of people post that they spend a lot more.

Looks like we'll have to turn the heating down and start wearing thicker jumpers indoors :D

Can't think where else we can cut back. (unless we have cold showers/baths) Brrr:eek:
