e;on - please help

Hi everyone, hope I have come to the right place as I just can't find anyone who seems to be able to help or advise me. I have just moved into a brand new built 3 storey, 4 bed house. My gas is supplied by e:on (Powergen). I work all day and only have my heating on for about 6 hours a day and my water for 3 hours. I only use my gas cooker (1 ring) for about 20 minutes an evening. In the rooms that are not used the radiator is turned right down to 1 and the thermostat is at a constant 21. My first bill has come through for the two months I have lived here and it is for £169.23, averaging £85.00 per month. This seems excessive to me? Am I right or is it just how much gas costs these days? They say I have used 578 domestic units over these last 8 weeks, please can someone tell me if this seems right or not? The bill is for gas only, not electric, I am on dual fuel and my electricity bill for the same period was only £44.00, both bills are from actual meter readings supplied by me firstly when I moved into the property and secondly when I actually phoned them up to ask for a bill!! Hoping someone can help or advise.

That would be a huge place to heat and sounds reasonable. I live in a terraced 2 bed house with huge high ceiling rooms and about £40 a month is approx its cost depending on time of year etc.

I appreciate your reply Garz, however, I know it sounds like a large property but it is a modern Town house, it is 1300 Sq feet, Due to it being brand new it is also supposed to be energy efficient. The average use of Gas units for a family in the UK is supposed to be 20,500 annually, I am not an average family..It really does seem excessive to me considering how much actual Gas is being expended due to my only being at home evenings and weekends and not in the house during the day as some families are.

I too am with E.ON. I live in a 3 bed semi and my gas bill is £228 for the last quarter, my electric is £180. I am out of the house from 8.30 til 3.30, try not to have the heating turned up too much and have resisted using the tumble dryer for the last month or so! I wonder if it's just E.ON?

£85 a month for a 1300 sq ft property in mid winter is high but not excessive.

It should help that it is 3 storey. Is it Det, semi/end tce, or mid tce?

The other point is that the fabric of a brand new house is cold and damp. It takes a huge amount of heat initially.

Thats all well Tazza, but my brother in law built his own house recently (large plot in N.Ireland). He had to rip out the insulation on one section as he found that it wasnt doing its job. That was a brand new 'energy efficient' piece of kit, from builders that are either friends or family. If anything I wouldnt trust most new builds as far as I could throw them, dont forget they are out to make a quick profit not make you house built to last like they used to.

Sorry for sounding negative but it is reality, in last couple of years the price rises have climbed alot. Monitor your usage , if you do spot anything its better sooner rather than later.

Cardew, it is a semi, I appreciate your point about the fabric of a new build. I will take your advice Garz and start monitoring my usage. Pink Pig, I believe all ht eenergy companies are as bad as each other, but that could just be the cynic in me!!

Yw tazza, and you are spot on they all can be just as bad as each other. After a while you can work out any problems or address things that may help it just takes time.

tazza - your place sounds exactly like mine. Family of 4 in it, and we're doing £100 a month for both gas & leccy. House is dead warm, run by Gledhill BoilerMate. Sure your meter readings were noted properly when you took the property over ?? Or the meters haven't been recorded incorrectly ?? Our water co. had allocated the wrong meters to the houses on our road, resulting in free water for the first couple of months...worth checking every detail 'coz it sounds way too much

im with eon and pay £82 a month for gas and electric and am £100 in credit at last bill
have 4 bed semi-heating on a LOT as we heat it when not here (cats) but usuaully someone here as we work diff shifts (5-6 people live here most time-one works away sometimes)
do loads washing cooking etc so and all radiators on full-your bills seems very high to me-but i agree with the new house-takes a while to warm through comment-give it a while to settle. as for choosing between suppliers-not much in nit i suspect-all after their profit !!!
even god cant change the past-no matter how many times i cry
