H i Barclays offer a basic bank account to bankrupts so I don't know why they refused you.
Try the Co-op cashminder. You can open it over the phone. Get AN eLECTRON CARD, internet banking, deposit money through the post office.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0

I opened a Nat West 'Step' account last year (you can do it online) with no problems. Also, co-op do a basic account, which is open to BRs to have, so you should be okay with that one too You can't control everything in life....... your hair was put on your head to remind you of that You can't control everything in life....... your hair was put on your head to remind you of that

            Co-op Cashminder account
Good points -- Comes with a Visa Electron card, which can be used online, high street shops, for bill payments & at Link machines.
- You can also set up direct debits on the account, & it has internet banking.
- You can pay money into it at the Post Office, as well as at Co-op branches.
 - Can take anything from 1-4 weeks to set the account up, depending on the amount of applications they've got.
- They don't seem to have publicised it, but they seem to operate a "3 strikes & you're out" rule (see this post), so you have to be prepared to keep a close eye on your account otherwise you might lose it.
- The internet banking isn't always up-to-date at the close of business, so your online balance may not be a true reflection of what's actually in the account.
- Not all branches are open on weekends.
- There aren't many branches.

Good points -- You can withdraw money from the post office, Barclays or Woolwich cash machines.
- Transfer money to other accounts by phone 24 hours a day.
- Can pay bills by direct debit or standing order.
 - Only comes with a cash card.
- No internet banking.

everyone seems to overlook the Think Banking account!!! I opened it just before Bankrupcy and think its ace, I got a debit card (maestro) which is exactly the same as my old Natwest one, it works evrywhere, you can do telephone banking, direct debits the lot, in fact when i come out of Bankrupcy even if offered a normal account will stick with this one, because you cant go overdrawn. Think the account fee is £12 a month, but the OR acepted it, and i think is worth it so i don't have to walk round with a crappy electron card that half of places dosn't exist>>>>>>>>0

Not overlooked, but the consensus seems to be that it is a bit of a rip-off.

Plus it's at least partly run by Gregory Pennington who have a bad reputation as a "debt management company".

I think £12 a month is a lot. What exactly do you get for that? I'd rather that £12 was in my pocket every month personally! You can't control everything in life....... your hair was put on your head to remind you of that

Yeah i think £12 is a lot especially as you can get those pre-paid maestro and even mastercards and that had 2 choices on it £4.95 a month for regular users or £1 a transaction for emergency users, i think i will get one of those for emergencies but if i go BR i think i will be sticking strictly to cash like the old days with a seperate tin for each expenditure on my i&e every month (i will keep it in the safe of course) so i cant over spend and get a pre paid card for emergnecies like petrol stations that dont have payment kiosks (our local Asda).
But then saying that i think i pay or was paying £12 a month for my Natwest gold account every month but i do get preferential rates on loans:rolleyes: and loads of other stuff (that i never use) plus free travel insurance for me and my partner.:rolleyes:Life is like a game of Snakes & Ladders, i almost made it to the top but now i'm at the bottom again and its a very long ladder to the top. I had it all and now its gone
Well my 6 years are now up, now to start to rebuild my life again

As for 'the crappy electron card' I personally have had no real problems with it. The only problems I have had is booking trains online, ordering Tesco's online and booking Travel Inns/Lodges online so I don't think that is to bad really :rolleyes:BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0

I think that is saying that if you have a "basic account" with one of the banks below, you can withdraw cash from the Post-Office as well as branch's of that bank. Not that they operate an account of their own.Cash withdrawal
If you have a basic bank account with one of the banks / building societies listed below you can take out cash free at the counter of Post Office™ branches using your card and PIN. Click on the links below to find out more about the services offered.
And most of those aren't BR friendly.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
