    DAILY MAIL

If I don't post it I know someone else will !..... I TOTALLY disagree with its use (I'll use others BUT NOT THESE) in establishments that cannot claim the money back (eg Tesco, Asda) because they are not members of The Booksellers Association

    What tosh.

If a retailer doesn't want to accept a coupon, no-one forces it to.

You mention Tesco not being a member of TBA - so why do they happily have the coupon in their system indicating it is to be accepted at their tills?

And this book club coupon has been accepted for over 12 months now.

Tesco decide which coupons to accept, not the customers.

yes but tesco WON'T accept it. It is the SA's who dont bother looking at them properly, and we all on here tend to pick "dead certs" when couponing.

As I said above this practise will make Tesco rethink their coupon policy
personally I'd rather give in a few coupons every week till I'm 90 than give in loads of £4 book tokens for the next 6 months and then find tesco have stopped taking them due to abuse.

Tesco DO accept it - it is in their system, and when you go to the checkout it is accepted.

Tesco's EPOS is set to accept any NSS barcode........which includes coupons from Asda, Somerfield, The Book token........AFAIK

Doesn't make it right to use them KNOWING that Tesco can't claim the money back via Valissis

However......out of respect for Quoia & his thread readers, may i suggest all further discussion on the rights & wrongs of the Book Token be continued in The Moneysaving Arms......a more suitable forum

How do you ever know a retailer is getting the value of a coupon back?

Does it matter to the customer?

Surely the customer only is bothered about using the coupon and getting its value knocked off the bill.

It is up to the shop whether or not to accept the coupon.

The discussion really is whether they can redeem the cash back, rather than if they accept it or not - you could give the till op a bale of hay and they could accept that as payment, although I'd like to see them put that in the till!!

But Tesco HO will be well aware of these coupons - do not for one minute believe that they do not know these are being used. They could do something about it if they wanted too, but they choose not to.

I think you'll find that all coupons starting with 99 are accepted by Tesco's tills UNLESS they've specifically blocked them or they're Tesco's own coupons in which case they can put restrictions on minimum spend, product purchase required, expiry date etc.

That's why most non-Tesco coupons will still work at Tescos after expiry date, also why the book coupon works, also why Somerfield and other store's coupons will generally work.

It doesn't actually mean they're valid, just that the till hasn't been programmed NOT to accept them. Imagine just how many thousands of coupons would need entering in the till system to make all coupons correctly product specific, within date, only valid at correct store etc. etc.?

I'm actually surprised that no-one has bothered to code the expiry date within the barcode as standard, though this would require several extra digits.
