Tesco Downloads

Hi

My daughter wanted to download some music tonight from tesco.com/downloads but when I came to enter my card details for payment there was no https in place of the http and no secure padlock at the bottom of the screen. This is definately not the case at other parts of the Tecso website, so I refused to go through with inputting my card details.

Does anyone know why this might be the case? Only thing I can think of is the site seems to use world pay to take payment, but why when they have their own check out procedures for other items I don't know...and anyway, why would world pay not have the https and secure padlock?

I now have one very upset daughter but as Tesco is the only site I can find that allows downloads on a pay per track basis I don;t quite know what to do. I can't afford to sign up for a monthly payment to napster or hmv....grrrr!

  • If it helps then iTunes allow you to pay per track. Its only 79p with no monthly subscription.

You do have to use iTunes software though.

Presumably if it's for an mp3 player then if they're using Tesco, iTunes won't be compatible with the player.

    Hi
It looks like those Tesco downloads are in wma format and are DRM protected.
Aren't there some (legal) websites offering non-DRM protected downloads now?
Or is that just wishful thinking.

  • superscaper isn't entirely correct. iTunes also do drm free music, in a m4a format, also amazon will be launching their music store soon and all that music is drm free.

Just being DRM free doesn't mean you're legally free to convert the music into another format. iTunes is a complete pain either way if you don't have an ipod and the DRM free itunes plus tracks are more expensive unless they've changed that.

I was saying I could reach the site.......
  • The reason you don't see https is because the Worldpay payment section is embedded into the Tesco page.

When you get to the credit card payment screen, right click somewhere in that payment section and then click on 'Properties.'

You'll see that the url starts with https and that you're actually inputting your CC details into the Worldpay site.

As mentioned above, just be aware that their songs are DRM WMA files which won't play on many cheaper brand MP3 players or phones without getting rid of the DRM protection first.

    Hope this helps. :)
