Zone Alarm - Warning

I got a prompt to download the latest issue of Zone Alarm yesterday, which I did - bad mistake !

When trying to install it I kept getting a message telling me to shut down "True Vector". When I try to do this it tells me it isn't running !

A quick Google on this brings up lots of hits about this problem.

Be warned !

Any software which operates at such a low level needs to be uninstalled and rebooted in my opinion, however it seems like this was some thing you could not avoid if it auto-installed. Im not sure if it warned you to take certain steps beforehand.

You have to stop the service from running (may require admin rights) before proceeding with your install.

wouldn't be the first time ZA had these problems.

The problem was was the free ZA Firewall on XP - have used it for years with no problems.

I did ( I thought !) uninstall it first, and rebooted. It appears that this particular part of Zone Alarm is not deleted with the main package.
You then have to start in safe mode , then go in and remove the offending bits manually - which is fine if you feel confident to do this, the vast majority of home users will not !

I had to delete Zone Alarm a while ago because of 'updates' screwing everything up. When it works it's great, but it's not worth the hassle when it doesn't!
I use Spyware Firewall and Browser Hijack Retaliator and they seem to do any job I need in way of protection as well as Ani-Vir
    Good Luck All

A well configured hardware firewall (router) and antivirus goes down far better with me than a software firewall as they are a pain to get right.
