diy or getting a professional to do it?

cheaper to buy plain white paint, than coloured

takes about a week to diy

you will need a very long ladder to do the gable end (like heights?), or hire scaffolding (added expense, plus additional time to put it up/take down)

roughly need 1 large tin of stabiliser for first coat, then about 8 large tins of the coloured coat - best to do 3 coats (roughly £10 for white or £20 for coloured, per tin)

would recommend using a name brand paint like dulux, if you want it to last - tried diy shop own brand, needed redoing within 2yrs

the main time consumer, is prep work, rubbing down, filling cracks, etc. - the actual painting is the easy bit, although tiring on the arms

If you are just talking about the 3 walls, then this could easily be achieved in 3 days(weather permitting), spend one day preparing with fungicide, leave to dry and wash off, if the walls need stabilising then do this! Then 1 coat to the walls the 2nd day, and the top coat on the 3rd day.I doubt very much that you will need 3 coats...Use Dulux trade paint as its the best

  • Thanks again, but if I were to get someone in to do it, just the painting, what would be a fair payment.

if i was going to do it, I'd charge you £300 for the labour + materials

I've just had a quote to paint the front and back walls of our house. (3 bed house, slightly larger than average). They said the walls are in good condition and just need two coats of paint.
I was thinking it would take the two of them 2 days at the most?

The quote is £540 for the labour.

They are very local, were recommended to me and I was given the impression that their prices were very reasonable?

thunderbird that is £135 each per day which is what most tradesmen charge these days and that is what raysur52 can expect to pay. i had work done on my house late last year and i was charged £130 a day. i would say newfunk would do that job in 2 and a half days is that fair newfunk?

Newfunk said they would charge £300 for labour and materials to do a bigger job.

Ours doesn't need any fungicide or stabilising, just painting. They could maybe get it done in one day actually, first coat in the morning and then the second coat in the afternoon.

I'd do it myself if I wasn't so scared of going up ladders!

newfunk said £300 labour plus materials but i still think they would want £120 to £130 a day, thats what they charge in my neck of the woods. (coventry) i learnt though you must get loads of quotes because they do have all have different ideas on how long it will take. we've got a fella who charges £130 a day but is very quick so takes him less days, so he says.

    good luck anyway

    regards chris

Sorry Chris, I misread newfunk's post!

I'm not that far from you, so I guess the rates should be similar here.

    Thanks for your input.
