Calgon, Hard Water, Washing Machine

Hi
I purchased a washing machine last year and haven't really considered using Calgon or a descaling product until yesterday when someone suggested putting vinegar in my Stainless Steel kettle, which I did and to my surprise, came out new this morning.
I briefly thought well if it works for the kettle, what about the washing machine, then I thought about all my clothes smelling like fish & chips or stale wine!
So I wondered is there any alternatives to Calgon, only I think it's pretty expensive.
If I did go down the Calgon route could I just use every couple of washes etc?
alternatively
like the kettle could I use and leave it in the washing machine over night?
any thoughts?
thank you
