M&S or Virgin?

I need to apply for a new card soon as I have two 0% offers ending.

Should I go for Virgin or M&S? I know M&S are now only 6 months and Virgin are 9 but I need to do TWO BT's and I don't want any fees.

  • I believe Virgin do good credit limits but I haven't got a virgin card yet.

I have just had an &More card with a disappointing £4k on it but I was trying to get myself "MBNA free".

You should probably go for Virgin unless the cards that are running out are MBNA as you can't transfer the money between MBNA cards.

Go for Virgin if you do not already have a MBNA card. They give me a £12,000 limit. M&S only offered £5K so I cancelled that card.
  • Why not get both?

If you've not made any applications for a few months, I'd definately go down this "2 card route".

On the subject of M&S vs Virgin, Mrs YB has both cards. She started out with Virgin @ £3.8K, then got Cap One 18 months @ £5.9K, and finally obtained M&S @ £9.5K. Her salary is around £17K and, prior to Virgin, had never had any form of credit in her own name (other then joint mortgage), let alone a credit card!

So, on this basis, M&S gave 2.5 times the limit that Virgin gave, despite her having an additional £9.7K of "debt".

Finally, and with M&S now being 6 months only, another option might be one of the Cap One 9 month special offer flyers (one fell out of my "Mail on Sunday" yesterday). As far as I can tell this offer is BT fee-free as well.

    Thanks for the replies folks

The important thing is that I have TWO balance transfers to perform so this means a card that doesnt have any fees attached.

I'm now looking towards RBS (I bank with them and they offer 0% for 9 months). Can anyone confirm that this card carries NO fees?

I've also had a MINT card in the past, however it was cancelled last November. Will this matter?
  • pioneer31,
when I cleared my MINT balance and cancelled the card some time ago, they said that I would be welcome to apply for another card after 9 months had elapsed.
...and then the window licker said to me...
