Disabled Students

Hi there so glad i found this great site !!

I am a disabled person and am planning to go to university to do a 2 year HND course starting sept 08. As I have already completed an honours degree back in 99 my local ed authority will not give me any help at all with financing the course, and the disabled student allowance will only cover things such as equipment, laptops etc so I am very stuck with how to find money for tuition fees and living expenses. It seems that every avenue I explore gets closed off and my problem is that I am trained in Hotel/Catering but because of my disablity (severe arthritis) I cannot work in that trade anymore and so I want to do a completely different course which will hopefully then lead to a career I can manage. Any suggestions or direction would very very very much appreciated. cheers, Simon

  • The university you go to might offer bursaries that you're eligible for and it's worth looking into whether there are any schemes/charities that could give you a grant or low-rate loan.

Apart from that, could you find a job that you can do? This might be difficult, but start writing to companies explaining your situation and the type of work you can do - you might get lucky. Some universities have schemes that help students find work, including work on campus, some of which may be suitable.
  • what about an adult learning grant from the local authority? or career development loan? http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/AdultLearning/CareerDevelopmentLoans/DG_10033240

As you already have a degree you will not qualify for the ALG.
    Gone ... or have I?
