    Get them to make burgers (most kids love them) and sugget things they can put in them but also let them make up their own concoctions and see how they turn out. We do bolognese themed ones and pork and apple but people on here have suggested curry flavour and thai flavour and mexican flavour. Try turkey/pork/lamb as a change from beef mince. They can even make some up for the freezer for you.

    Bread and butter pud is quite easy. or rice pud. Again I would let them get on with it but see if they can start thinking about variations they could try for next time. Or see if they can make a savoury bread pud and what they might like in it. It would be nice to get them involved in the idea of what goes well together and how they can take a basic recipe and make it their own, they might have fun thinking up their "secret ingredient"

    We made some delicious pork burgers tonight;
    dice onion, fry in olive oil with ground cumin, coriander and sage. Allow to cool. Add two eggs and pork mince, mix, then fill a burger mould and grill for 25 minutes, turning when necessary. Top with a pineapple ring and a slice of cheese and grill for a further 5 minutes. Serve with sweet potato wedges (sweet potatoes sliced, drizzled in olive oil and cooked alongside the burgers) on a bed of rocket.
    Easy and absolutely delicious.
    That's Numberwang!

    H there,

    I have a 9 year old son who I am determined will be able to cook a decent meal long before he leaves home. I want him to grow up to be a new man. lol

    Each week, I am "supervising" while he cooks dinner. I am fast running out of simple ideas, so thought I would ask you people what you would suggest.

    I've done things like pasta bake, fish in foil parcels, omelettes and spag bol.

    Any ideas?

    Lasagne, simple meat and two veg type roast or how about asking him to choose a recipie even if it's a bit more complicated and letting him go out and buy the ingredients with you. I'm with you on teaching them to cook.

    I'd get a kids cookbook and do some sweet recipes as well - muffins, simple cake, flapjack. Can he boil an egg? sounds daft but you have to learn! What about making pancakes (thin or american) for breakfasts? What about making bread or iced buns from D&DD's apple braid recipe? What would *he* like to cook?

    Ds2 will cook anything - he helps me all the time and *has* to do it all (he's 3!) yet ds1 (he's 5) starts off with enthusiasm and then gets bored... I try and involve him in choosing what to do so that he gets a good mix and enjoys what we are doing.

    Lamb hotpot is very easy in a throw it all in no frying required sort of way! Have shown DS how to do that. i was planning the beany tortilla bake off the Vegetarian society website next. that just needs assembling I think!
