they will have placed their bid of £9.50 in the morning, but as long as no one outbids them at a low price, the auction will sit at that low price

You come along at 2pm and bid £9, so their higher bid of £9.50 kicks in and wins the auction

if their maimum bid was say 10 quid then you will loose.
they may have been winning up to that point with say 99p. but their maximum bid is private. only they know it.

time differences can occur, during you bidding period, cause you cannot see whats happening in real time.

Inrements are 50p at this level so of course they will win as they have bid more than or at least equal to £9.50.

Now if they had won it for £9.49 or less then I can see you having a point.

What does bidded mean.....is this a new word?

Someone outbid you because they bid more before you did.

OK thanks for the pointers everyone - but I do know there are some tricks to bidding on ebay (e.g. sniping etc.) can anyone throw some light on these?

sniping is just a method of bidding for you in your absence. and it normally works at the last minute. but of course you set the max bid price.
if you max bid price isnt enough to win, then you will loose.

a sniping tool is automated SW. some is free SW and some is paid for.
