Student room rental prices

Firstly let's face it, who controls the levels of student room prices?

The reason I raise this topic, is because I live in a student house and pay over £50 a week just to rent a single room. Now i know this is reasonably cheap but what I take issue to is that this house was formally a council house.

Was the government really that stupid in the past not to realise these council houses were very attractive to investors wishing to affordably cashin on students needs.

Unfortunately the majority of where student loans go is to into the landlord's pockets. Maybe we're just paying for Thatcher's "right to buy" mistake? In that the government lost control of this affordable housing to the business?

I mean put it this way, there are four bedrooms in this house and no lounge, the combined rent is almost £1k a month. What are the rates for council houses?

So considering alot of student houses are former council houses, who's fault is it that students have to get into so much debt?

    The government only really looks towards the next election so it's trying to maximise short term gain. From that point of view selling council houses gets them the money and means they don't have to worry about repairs and administration. Same thing applies to privatisation and outsourcing. Remember that some of the properties sold then came in for huge maintenance bills.

    The revenue could have been applied to student fess and maybe it was for a time but with the policy of increasing student numbers it wouldn't be possible for tax revenue to finance it so we get the triple benefit of lower college finance, lower unemployment figures and lower unemployment benefits - plus increased personal debt which benefits financial institutions.

    Doubt if selling council houses has anything affect on student debt.
    In fact it sounds like you are benefitting from the property being available - I doubt if it would be if it were still council owned.
