blagging discounts

As students, we don't have much cash, so any discounts on anything is useful, right?

I thought here would be a good place to post student-friendly companies who are willing to reduce fees/prices/whatever with a little bit of pleading and mentioning of student poverty.

I'll start it off with vodafone. Told them I wanted to go on payg to reduce my monthly spend as I was soon going to be a student, they immediately offered me cheap line rental with loads of freebies.

Specsavers have also been great with my contact lens subscription, so that I use/pay less.

I'm going to try wanadoo next, will let you know how it goes :)

How about anyone else, where are the best places for pleading student poverty?

Well, so far I've got a month free broadband out of wanadoo. It's a start at least, and a bit more money in the kitty.

Is there not a sticky at the top of this board for student discounts?

well, they're not really discounts as such, because I'm not talking about the sort of thing that is offered to everyone. More a case of, if you've got the cheek to ask, these companies are sympathetic.
  • i got a decent deal with orange. I went on a contact which came with 125mins a month and they gave me 1000 free texts a month just cus i was a studnet. The deal is for a year but if i wanna keep the deal for up to four years i can. Even though i have just finished as a student :j certainly worth asking about ... if you are cheeky enough :D

Theres a website called Student free stuff or something (google it).

Try local companies/shops near your university.

Try NUS online aswell. There is also a worldcard (again google) and you get discounts etc ...
