Seems to me that B Gas have got the most sensible way of dealing with this by adding the two tariffs together.

Depending on how much electricity you use and how you use it it is still possible to save money with E7, it may require minor lifestyle changes but it is possible.

These are my real life figures from when the meter was brand new and only showing a few test units. It was installed 10 and a bit months ago and my supplier is Equipower.

    Night Units Total 1854 KWh
    Day Units Total 2059 KWh

    Total units 3913 KWh

    Cost of Night units @ £0.0373 = £69.15
    Cost of Day units @ £0.1097 = £225.87

    Total cost on E7 = £295.02

    HTH

How did you get rates like that for your E7? My region with Equipower is 16.31 day 5.07 night!

My old analogue meter was replaced last year to a digital one for FREE as part of a rolling renewal program.
The digital ones are flexible, so you can have Economy 7 or not on the same meter. I might want to charge an electric car every night in a couple of years, so flexibility is good.

There is also a smart meter initiative, which aims to put in two way communication between meter and power company's computer. They are talking about smart meter in every home by 2020, so the roll-out should start soon.

I don`t know how they get those rates, unless there`s a standing charge involved.

Anyway I was with Ebico for both my gas and electricity.
Having searched the switching sites, but more importantly did my own calculations, based on a years usage,I changed, through TopCashBack site, to British Gas Websaver 5.

I have never, ever been a great fan of BG but you can`t ignor facts and figures and the savings to be had, and I must say, much improved CS.

Ebico is a good, ethical company but with the cost of energy and the current climate, cutting heating bills is vital.

No names, but my supplier's current Economy 7 fixed price deal looks like this:

    Before discounts:

    First 900kWh per year 30.597p per /kWh
    Day units 14.5425p per kWh
    Night Units 4.6725p per kWh

After 25.50% Discount (Dual fuel, DD, Online):

    First 900kWh 22.79p
    Day units 10.83416p
    Night units 3.4810p

The above unit prices include VAT.

Which is very close to Mr. Proctalgia's figures.

Thanks, it was more that they were equipower prices I was surprised at rather than the prices themselves. :D
