  • Hope they get the system up for you soon. Managed to squeeze in 2 days ahead of deadline this year, paid online by debit card and got an email receipt, so it's brilliant when everything works. But I think they ought to take a lenient view of late submissions if it's down to their own IT systems. Grab a screenshot just in case!

It has just been on BBC News 24 that they are having problems with their website, and anyone who files on line will not be fined as long as it is done by midnight on 1st Feb

Whilst I appreciate how frustrating it has been for those taxpayers who have had difficulties filing online today I think HMRC have been very generous extending the deadline given that those taxpayers have had 10 months to get their tax returns in.

If the computer system can't cope today then goodness knows how it is going to cope next year when those people who normally file papers returns at the last possible minute are forced to file online next year.

It is not generous at all - I have spent many frustrating hours all day trying to log in to complete and file my tax return, including just now and still cannot get in  . Extending the deadline is the least they can do - they have actively encouraged people to fill in online and need to provide systems that can cope no matter what the demand. Yes, the deadline is today - why would I want to pay tax before I have to (and lose interest - not very MSE!)?

The date you file your Return has no bearing on the date you need to pay any tax due.....that is 31st January whether you file on 6th April (the day after the tax year end) or 31st Jan.

Incidently, I've been trying to get on the SA website again today to view some payment details for a client but so far I still can't get on - it lets me log on but then just hangs.
