Help Printer and Internet Problems

I recently installed a Canon Pixma IP1000 and am having problems. When I try to print I get the message "cannot find USB Port may be in use by another" Once I have had that message then I cannot use my internet - it says Page Cannot be displayed. I then have to shut down and reboot.
I have tried installing/uninstalling but I can't uninstall it because I get a message " BJ in use by another file - close existing programme first " - haven't a clue what this means. I have also tried swapping the ports - any suggestions please as its driving me mad.

it may be the motherboard cannot support more than one usb item at a time (even if you have 2 or more usb ports !) and you may need a powered hub...(one with it's own power supply)

if you need to uninstall, boot the pc into "safe mode" by hitting the F8 key on boot up (if using Xp or Me) and uninstall from there.

Some unscrupulous computer manufacturers, when USB was still young, provided more than one slot, but only one actual working connection, or non-standard connectors.

Do other USB devices work in that slot, while you have your normal setup?

It may be worth downloading the latest drivers, also. Go here.

Yes have 2 ports and other things work in both. Have downloaded drivers like Scott said so fingers crossed.

my windows 98 machine will not work with certain devices except with the powered hub once my broadband modem was plugged in...forget anything else

Its a bit hit and miss now but at least it works sometimes. If I switch printer on as the machine is booting up it tends to work. If I boot up and switch printer on after then it doesn't. I usually 'restart' computer and it seems to pick it up then. Thanks.
