to be honest, when i received the two vouchers, they came at different times. one was a week before the other. so i genuinly thought it was a 'compensatory' voucher. i even queried it with the pc world business guy who used them against the replacement laptop.

This might make a big difference, as you asked prior to using them - you didn't mention querying this in your original post.

    My take on it -

Someone sends you something you suspect is wrong - you do not need to send it back, just keep it unused for them to arrange return... If I recall correctly, you don't even have to walk it to the post box if you're not inclined unless you signed something accepting that responsibility! I'm not sure if you're obliged to inform them - but you're saying you did inform PC World business instore.

You keep it as required, then go to the shop and enquire with an agent if you can use it. They say yes.

PC World told you the voucher was yours when you asked. The advisor you asked may have been wrong to do this, but decided to tell you anyway. They then entered into a sales contract with you based on their error. Taking the store credit out of the equation, if you paid straight out for a laptop and they mistakenly told you it was a few hundred less, then once you got it past the till, it's yours for that price.

If you are fortunate enough to have made this transaction over the phone, it might be recorded.

I reckon you did everything correctly. Enquiring instore must only be the same as asking if they are capable of answering the question, and as all involved are agents of PC World, surely they are all responsible for the advice they give? Doesn't it mean they missold it?

I agree with Johnmoney05, You could tell them you'll return the laptop but insist on a full refund of your original amount including the coverplan cost as they (I'm guessing) broke the contract by not replacing the laptop after 4 weeks.

    thanyou all for your replies.

Some one also suggested to me

"it is not right for the store to pay out in goods (which I would not otherwise have bought) and then expect to be repaid in cash. This is why we have rules against sending unsolicited goods to people and demanding payment for them"

"The absolute most they should get is the return of the laptop for an exchange for goods of the correct price. At least then they are not profiting from their mistake, nor causing hardship. But really, the goods vouchers should be considered a gift under unsolicited goods regulations"

this i would agree to, to return the laptop for replacement of the true ORIGINAL value (£1800)...withou hassle, but to ask for 'cash' refund for vouchers which I could only spend in currys/pcworld stores?

that would be like me refunding them the money in vouchers to spend in my shop?
