Car insurance 17year old

Hi Guys,

Im new to this site but joined because i have heard good assistance is given here so i hope you guys can help :)

I am currently taking my driving lessons and hope to pass shortly, but i am buying a car shortly rather than later but im just hunting arround for insurance, I have a full motorcycle licence and have neerly 2 years NCB from that.

What will be the best way to get insured and for me to gain NCB from the car? i know if my mother is the main driver the quotes drop from the 3k mark to just over the 1k mark, what is the best way for me to get the cheapest insurance whilst still gaining NCB for a car?

I hope you guys can help and keep in mind i am only 17 (18 shortly) at the moment.

Thanks a lot!
Jay

Which is illegal and know as 'fronting', if the car is yours and you are the main driver it must be insured in your name with your own policy.

No easy way to build up your NCD, some companies, Direct Line are one, will recognise your bike NCB IF you stop riding your bike. E car insurance, HERE, were the cheapest for my 18 y/o son, £1040 TPF&T for a 1L Corsa. Pass Plus would have knocked £200 off. Probably going to be best to wait til you are 18 as the quotes were £300 + more for him at 17. Think you can also get £40 back through Quidco. Norwich Union were the best for fully comp but over £1800 with a £600 compulsary excess he decided to take the risk with 3rd party.

I was looking at insurance for my 19 year old son last night and couldn't even get his insurance below the £1000 mark, Those quotes were for a full license held for a year, no NCB and the car left on the drive (Kent address) overnight. We tried the Citroen C3 as starters but will go back to the comparison sites and try a different car today to see if we can't get something less than £1000.

Well i must admit i didnt know that it was illegal, because most of my friends are insured like that :S but nice to know thanks :) as for the quotes there stupidly expecive and its all ageism, they automatically think teens are bad.

So what is the best way to get the cheapest insurance, im looking at a 1.2L 16V Clio "01" thanks.

There is a fair bit of material on the web which confirms it is. There are also examples of rejected complaints on the FOS website where insurance companies have refused claims because of fronting, the person has complained to the FOS (usually the parent) and the FOS have sided with the insurance company.

If caught fronting, it can end up being something that you have to declare on all future car insurance applications for the rest of your life under the insurance fraud question. That can really push the old premiums up far more than an age penalty.

Do a Passplus course, some insurance companies will give you a years no claims which can be up to 30% off, your driving instructor will have details of companies that give a discount or ask companies when you are trying to get quotes.

The reason insurance is so high for newly qualified drivers is because you are four times more likely to have an accident in the first two years after passing your test than at any other time in your driving lifetime, not necessarily because you are a bad driver mainly just down to lack of experience, and of course some forget everything they were taught while learning the day after passing the test.

I've just spent hours searching for car insurance for my 17 year old son on a provisional licence. The cheapest was directline.

We have named him as the main driver with parents as named drivers. He asked his friends about their insurance, out of 16 boys with their own cars only one had insurance in their own name!

That figure doesn't surprise me, I was tempted to put my lad on my insurance but as pointed out it is illegal, well illegal might be too strong a term, I'm sure the Police would be ok with it but certainly the insurance companies are wising up to it and cancelling policies where they suspect it is happening.

Usually insuring someone on a provisional licence is cheaper as they will be supervised by a more experienced driver, it is when you try to insure as a newly qualified driver, in their own right, that the cost rockets.

Not with directline, I did the quote online both ways and it was identical.
