Can I still get the "new customer" credit card deal?

Having just being turned down for the Capital One "no transfer fee" card, I feel my best bet may be to look towards my bank - HSBC - to see if I can get a card through them.
About 10 years ago when i opened a student account with them, i took out their credit card. About 3 years ago I closed that card down. I have since had cards with Egg (still open), Halifax (closed) and Virgin (still open).
After being turned down by Capital One (no idea why - I met all their "excellent" credit rating criteria) I am a bit twitchy about applying a 2nd time. HSBC are offering 2.9% interest for 2 years with a 2.5% fee - since I plan to move house before the end of this Summer - and use the equity in my current house to cover the deposit and clear my outstanding debts, I just want a card to cover me until then.
Would I be able to get a HSBC card and get their balance transfer offer, even though I have previously been a credit card customer of theirs? Is my best bet to apply on-line, or go into a branch and speak to someone there?
Would speaking to someone in a branch allow me to get any indication of what credit limit I may get without them having to do another search on me? I need to transfer about £6k off one card, and £800 off another.
Will the rejection I got from Capital One in anyway hamper my chances of an application to another lender?

Yes, ask them what your pre-approved limit is for a credit cardWill the rejection I got from Capital One in anyway hamper my chances of an application to another lender?
Unlikely - this will appear as a search on your credit file but doesn't record whether your application was successful.
However, I would think it unlikely HSBC will approve the CC if C1 have turned you down (are you sure there's no credit issues on your file?)0 -

Thanks for the info!
I haven't looked at my credit file, but Virgin increased my credit limit just after christmas from 5,500 to 6,200 (i'd never spent a penny on the card sine transferring a balance on to it about 13 months prior). I've never missed a payment - only thing i've done recently is use my Virgin Card to clear my HSBC overdraft - i've regularly been in my agreed overdraft limit but never exceeded it
I understand that a lot of people are getting turned down the the no-fee balance transfer capital one card0
