But that was presumably by someone pretending to be Jeremy Clarkson, rather than the recipient of the DD, and if the gym actually contacted the bank pretending to be the OP, then surely that is against several laws?!0

If it's a fixed fee each month then why does it really matter if it's a Direct debit instead of a standing order? You still don't have to do anything and you still pay the same.0
