Someone keeps faxing my phone!

Options
Some dumb company keeps trying to send faxes to my home phone, which ties up the line for ages, and if I am out, I come back to an answerphone full of fax tones. I don't have a fax machine so can't fax them back to ask them not to do this. I've tried phoning the fax number and did once get through to someone, and asked them to stop doing it, but they said it was a large company, they didn't know who was doing it, and I should unplug my phone unless I wanted to use it to make a call to stop being bothered by it

Any ideas how to get this to stop. We've been in the house for 3 months now, which you'd think would be ample time for this company to realise that the fax number isn't still operative, whoever owned it before (not the previous owners of the house by the way, as we were allocated a new phone number.

All ideas about how to stop this would be appreciated. I'm already registered with TPS but obviously this isn't quite the same thing

    This may help.
Register your number with the Fax Preference Service

This has happened to me and I called BT and gave them the number that was trying to fax me. They said they would check who the number belonged to and contact them direct and it never happened again after that.

  • Hi,

This is just an idea but why don't you ring your telephone provider and ask them if you can put a block on this number from contacting you. As I would this not be thought of as a nuisance call?

    Good Luck

We had this happen when my line rental was with BT. Customer services put me through to the nusiance calls centre.

They put something on the line and when the fax called, I had to press a code on my phone to log it, then hang up and ring the nusiance calls centre. They could then trace the call and ask the company to stop doing it.

It only took a couple of calls and the matter was sorted.
Here I go again on my own....

Thanks for all the tips. Have registered with FPS and got the Nuisance Calls Bureau to put a trace on the line. If all else fails they will give me a new phone number free of charge, which has previously been used only on a residential address.

Hopefully this will sort it, as I was getting a bit ratty!

I had this when we moved into our house four years ago. After some investigation it turned out that the number that BT had given was "recycled", and used to belong to a building company that had gone bust a few years before. I registered with all the right organizations and haven't had any fax calls for at least three years.
