no need for mobile as know how this works. any ideas on landlines be great. thanks in advance. just dont want to waste buying phones in Uk when we are eventually moving to france!Apparently there are some differences in voltages or something.

The UK is one of only a very few countries (AFAIK, France is not one of them) which uses the 'BT' type connector plug so that'll stop you just plugging a UK phone in.

When setting up a UK corded phone in Spain (I assume the same would have been necessary if I had been setting up a UK DECT phone), I had to make a little interface box - a Spanish (male) connector to plug into the Spanish telephone socket with a short fly lead connected to terminals 2 and 5 of a BT master socket - and plug the UK phone into that. I'm not sure of the details but I believe the BT master socket contains a capacitor which stores voltage to activate the ring whereas continental systems don't use such things.

April's reply is all good stuff. I believe most phones are made for international markets now, so it will be just the lead to sort out rather than line voltages.

You can get adaptors, normally to US fittings such as the ones shown at this page. The French jack is a beast of a thing, and you're most likely to find an adaptor in a PC store rather than a phone shop.
