The guy from CAP told me that the limit was £2000  now I don't know what to do??

Rog2 - do you have any advice here please?

There is no 'hard and fast' figure, mot, although between £1000 and £2000 'seems' to be the norm - it does depend on convincing the OR (in bankruptcy) or the IP (in an IVA) of how important the car is for you - eg whether you need it for your work, or looking for work, or are disabled, no bus services, etc.
In saying that, there have been instances, on the bankruptcy board, where OR's have 'siezed' cars of little value, although they often give the br's family the opportunity to 'make a reasonable offer' to purchase the car.
It is, unfortunately, one of the most inconsistent areas in insolvency. The Insolvency Service do issue 'guidelines' but these are open to local interpretation.
Just one thing, though - selling prices very rarely respect the true value of a car - this tends to be based on 'trade/auction' value and could be much less than 'retail'.

It is, indeed, an excellent and very informative post, and was posted by our very own 'fermi', so you can rest assured as to its validity.
