Found 39p stamp in drawer - can i use it?

I need to post a letter and rather than going to post office I was just going to put a couple of first class stamps on it as I've weighed it and know I need at least 70p postage. However, I've just found a pink 39p stamp in the drawer (it must be a few years old), can I use it?

Hi Unused stamps are always worth their face value so 39p is still 39p no matter how old.

Like wise an old red 1st class stamp is still first class

Almost......I believe stamps are still valid for the purpose of postage until the death of the 3rd successive monarch. However, you might find that a GeorgeVI stamp might be worth more than its face value to a collector.

  • Stamps can also be used as legal tender, should you ever need to pay for your groceries with postage stamps... though I suspect the checkout monkey at Tesco may struggle with the concept.

I found out recently that you can't use a First or Second class stamp which doesn't carry a sterling face value as part/payment for mail going out of the country - eg a letter to Europe, cost 48p, can't be made up from a 1st class stamp plus odd 14p if the 1st class stamp doesn't bear a sterling value

I use 1st and 2nd class stamps on all my items. Like said above, you can use 2x 2nd class stamps for an airmail letter. Or for something that costs £1.84 to send by 1st class, i'd use 4x 1st and 2x 2nd. Saves the queue in the post office!

I use any stamps for UK & overseas
A while back I had a an envelope
full of old unused stamps used
the lot on all my parcels even the
Isle of Man,Jersey & Guernsy stamps
checked the last three types with RM
    before using.

    Overseas bidders love it
when you use stamps on their parcels.
