Tesco took my money twice

Hello all,

My shopping was delivered on 18/1/08 . On the 21/1/08 the money was taken from my bank account twice. I contacted Tesco's on the 25/1/08 and this money was refunded I was told this would take three working days. I contacted my bank (HSBC) today as I have yet to receive it and they say it will take at least seven days. Whilst I appreciate that the banks practices are not Tesco's fault I have been left with no access to money since Friday. I have not been able to fill my car with petrol, am running out of nappies and I haven't eaten since yesterday. I am of extremely limited means and whilst this again is not Tesco's or HSBC's fault I am just so distressed all I can do is cry. (HSBC did offer to potentially ,no guarantee, increase my overdraft temporarily for a whopping £25 fee!)
Thanks Tesco and HSBC for turning me into a gibbering wreck.

If you write a polite letter or email to Tesco customer services explaining the inconveniences caused by something which was, after all, their mistake then they may give you a little "We're sorry" code for £10 or something on your next shop. Their mistake should be their problem, not yours. I've always found Tesco to be genuinely happy to help when they make mistakes, but only when they are approached in the right way. I know that doesn't help your situation now but it may make next month a little sweeter.

I'm disappointed that HSBC can't come up with a better solution though. A short-term (a week) free overdraft of £50 may make an unhappy customer of theirs happier. Small fry to them, massive fish for you.

Hope it works out as well as it can.
  • We got charged twice before xmas as I had to reschedule a delivery. The reason; my girlfriend was in labour at the time  !! (I was trying to convince her to hold off going to hospital until the shopping arrived but thats another story...)

The thing is it took them several weeks to refund us and each time i phoned they kept on saying the refund is being processed. I would strongly recommend phoning them every day until this is resolved and ask for someone's direct dial. I'm sure that way they will do it and ask to speak to a manager every time. Its unacceptable and not what you need with a baby! Good luck with it though and it will be over soon.

  • We have had a similar problem with ASDA. We used the online shopping service. Ordered the goods we needed, paid via debit card and all was good. right up untill we checked the online banking 2 days later. ASDA had also taken payment for our shopping twice. We called the bank, they infomed us that the money that was missing from the acccount had indeed gone to ASDA. The money reappeared in the account the following day and we assumed that it had been one of those occasional mistakes that hepen from time to time.

Roll on one week, time to do the shopping again so we give ASDA the benefit of the doubt and do the weeks shopping once again on line. use the debit card to pay, and yet gain the ammount is taken twice. We once again called the bank who once again informed us that ASDA had indeed taken the money again twice. (this was today so no news yet as to when the money will reappear.)

We then ring ASDA's customer support to be informed that the system works as so:

When you do you shoping, you make your list and are charged the appropriate ammount for yous shopping which is taken from your card (all well and good so far, exactly what you would expect to happen). What then happens is that this money is then held by ASDA untill your shopping is delivered, THEN they take a second payment (which may or may not be different ammount depending on substitute products etc.) which is then the ammount they keep for the shoping.

This means that they now hold the original ammount PLUS the acutal ammount of the delivered goods, The original ammount is supposedly refunded to your account over night, altho this isnt always the case. Therefore you can be left with a shopping bill for DOUBLE the ammount you have actually spent with no idea as to when you will get your money that you origionaly laid out back.

So much for convinience. I don't find not being sure of when I will actualy be able to pay my rent for the week convinient. (and I dare say, neither will my landlord).

If this is the way this so caled convinent method of shopping works, I am not sure that I realy WANT to shop on line anymore as it then throws my finiances completely out of the windo for the entire week. Fortunatly, the taking of the second payment on the second occasion did NOT result in my bank account going overdrawn and me incurring a fee for my unauthorized overdraft. The only reason I avoided one the first time was because I dealt with the bank directly and they waived the fee for me otherwise ASDA would ahve cost me another £35 on top of my food bill. This makes budgeting extremely difficult and the likely hood of bank charges because of this practice is very high for anyone on a tight budget.
