Stamp duty

Can anyone advise me please, I'm wondering if stamp duty is calculated on the purchase price of a property or on the surveyors valuation of the property?
Thanks very much in advance

It is based on the market value.
Which could be neither as a surveyor's valuation for a mortgage will never be higher than the purchase price. An independent surveyor's valuation would be a bit more like it.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Thanks hun, I've been offered the chance to buy the house I currently rent for approx a third of its value - too generous an oppertunity to pass up, and I'm just trying to figure out how much I need up front.

What's it really worth do you think? You'll get away with some downward leverage, just not too muchEverything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

well its an extended semi and its 'other half' sold for £270000 5 years ago so I'm guesstimating £3500000
