  • Yes, I was also surprised at just how long a regular cycle takes. 5hrs for Whole Wheat.
We have just had a Lidl open nearby, so I'll give their flour a go as it's bound to be cheaper too.
Your ideas sound great Penny. I'll try then some time.
I'm trying my staple recipes from "The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook" by Jennie Shapter, so I'll let you know how it's gone in a few days. The Malted Loaf is devine,:A though I never needed a fruit dispenser.
I found the recipe book that came with the LG to be terrible. Nearly threw the machine away until I discovered some good recipes.

Hi I've just bought a Panasonic SD-254. My wife & I have no experience of using a breadmaker but have tried to follow the instructions for making a medium white loaf. We pu the teaspoon of quick yeast powder (Doves Farm) at the bottom of the pan, added the 400g of Strong Whte flour (Waitrose), teaspoon of salt, 2 tablespoons of milk powder, 15g of butter and 270 g of water. Set the breadmaker to go overnight last night (bakes for 4 hours) but in the morning, the bread had not risen at all. It didn't look as if it had mixed properly either (20 or so grams of flour stuck to the bottom of the bread.

We've just tried the 2 hour quick bake (2 hours) today using Alisons Very Strong white flour but have had exactly the same result. (bread not risen at all)

I'm beginning to think it is either because it's not mixing well enough, or perhaps the yeast is the problem.

Does anyone know how to check whether the yeast is active enough or indeed whether I should try to either mix the yeast with the other dried ingredients and then add the water or to mix the yeast in with the water provided I use the 'cook now' quick bake option.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Change the yeast, I use the hovis yeast in the sachets, I can get 3 loaves out of one. I also use the doves flour in the green bag.

I always bake now on the rapid bake cycle and have never had a failure.

I remember reading something a while back about the yeast you have giving poor results, I think it was when I ifrst got mine last year.
  • I found that I needed more water for the best loaf, and I load it the other way round

320ml water from the tap - that's v cold just now!
520g white flour (stopped the brown when it went up a while ago but I used to do 1/3 brown and 2/3 white yummy)
    Scant teaspoon salt
    scant tablespoon sugar
knob butter (or what passes for)
make a dip in top of flour pile for knob of fresh yeast free from tesco bakery and kept in container in fridge for up to two weeks OR teaspoon dried active yeast for bread maker, hovis by preference, never got great results with dove myself, tesco was ok if only that available. Keep rest of sachet it fridge to use next time.

    Medium loaf, light crust.

I always use the four hour programme and most days do that on the timer.

Make sure your paddle sits well down on the spindle.

I stopped milk powder and got a better loaf.

If you're having problems and you think it might be the batch of flour next time you do a loaf use about third of one brand and two thirds of another to use it up.

Just checked your post Davie - did you forget to add sugar? It won't rise well without that. Also You say 400g flour is that right? I haven't looked at the recipe book for ages but I do the above recipe 6/7 days minimum and I use 520g flour to 320ml water.
  • We use olive oil instead of butter. I *think* you get a less crumbly loaf with some fat in it....

I'm having a problem with my Panasonic with bread not rising. I've tried lots of combinations with new packs of flour and different brands of yeast, but the results are the same. It seems like the bread rises then just stops, making a square loaf. Today's was the worst, it rose then sank about an inch in the middle. I'm beginning to wonder if there's something wrong with the machine:confused: Hope not........
