in Credit cards
Hi
Last September my mother in law booked a holiday for us all through a travel company the total cost included car hire in america (approx £350). She paid the full amount on her credit card and received an email confirmation which included the car hire.
We went on holiday and was talked into upgrading the car to get a child seat. I paid the cost of the upgrade on my credit card. When we returned from holiday I had the upgrade cost from dollar car hire appear on My credit card statement which i duely paid. This week I have noticed dollar care hire have charged my card £666 for what i do not know. My mother in law emailed them and they say that they never received payment for the car hire from the travel company who she booked the holiday with so have charged the amount to my credit card. She has tried to phone the travel company she booked with but their phone number no longer works, although dollar have managed to get hold of them? which is strange.
Where do i stand with regard this issue. The original hire deal wasn't in my name nor was the payment so how can dollar charge me if they have not been paid by the travel company.
If my mother in law has already paid the car hire cost to the travel company and they have not paid dollar car hire - can dollar really charge us for the hire cost ?
any advice greatly appreciated.
thanks

I would contact your card provider and ask them to pass the details of the transaction to the Disputes department. They will be able to answer your question as they'll know the regulations etc. I would emphasise the fact that the booking was made in someone else's name and you gave your card details for the upgrade only.
To me it would seem common sense that you've only authorised the payment for the upgrade, the original agreement wasn't between you and the car hire company so I doubt they have any authority to take that payment from your card... unless maybe there was something hidden away in their T&Cs when you upgraded?
When you contact your credit card company then it may be best to ask them to also block the card and get a new one sent out to you, if you haven't got any plans to use your card within the next week or so... just in case the car hire company tries to put through another payment.0 -
thanks for the advice. I will phone the credit card again and get them to chase this up. I thought they shouldnt be able to charge the full amount to my credit but wanted to double check.

If they had not had payment before you arrived surely they would not have let your mum drive the car away!
Dispute this transaction.
The amount charged is a lot more than the £350 agreed, are you sure that there is nothing you are not telling us like any accidents or bumps etc??0 -

Yes not sure why the fee was much higher - we are waiting on Dollar coming back to my mother in law. There was no damage that we know of.
Can't understand how they can take this transaction out on my account if the original bookign was in my mother in laws name and with her credit card.

May I suggest you write to CC company, rather than phone. Simply state you did not authorise this payment and wish to raise a dispute. It is up to Dollar to state their case as to why they debited your account.
I would guess that your authorisation to bill CC gave them authority to charge you for .......... i.e. whatever they want, but you would need to read their T&Cs carefully."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
