Vegetarians don't eat just vegetables and you don't need to buy processed 'suitable for vegetarians' ready made meals, you can cook plenty of meals from scratch.

We do eat meat but not every night there are other meals we have which I make from scratch that do not contain any meat.

I am not interested in becoming a vegetarian but I do not think it is healthy to eat meat at every meal and am going to have a look at the links given earlier to get other ideas.

I'm one of those almost veggies who occasionally eats fish :) sorry gingham I do know exactly what you mean because DH is a full on veggie and he gets cross about people assuming he eats fish too :)

    http://www.vegsoc.org/fish/

The trick with tofu is to freeze - defrost - squeeze. It takes some of the juice out and makes it less jelly like. We use relate mock chicken pieces, hubby sears them in some olive oil & garlic and adds them to currys etc.

Personally I find the dehydrated tvp mince better than the frozen one. If you marinate in in pasta sauce, gravy etc it soaks up the flavor much better and makes it really good for bolognese or mince and onion etc.

My (farmer) Dad went ballistic when I turned vegetarian at 13 and I've never forgot his lack of support. I was born to be vegan, it's just such a natural thing for me.

Just don't tell her how cruel the milk farming industry can be, or you might have a vegan on your hands which will be even harder to accomodate...

Actually, I just don't understand people who are veggie for "cruelty" reasons but drink standard industry milk.

(I'm a meat eater, btw, does that make me a less kind human being? Or just someone whose views are different to yours?)

Lilly's mum - There is a thread in oldstyle currently about asking for recipes when one of the family members is veggie and the other's aren't. It was started by Kimberley. You could take a look on there for ideas.

Curious george- my 4yo daughter did something similar- she announced she was becoming a vegetarian when she saw a chinese takeaway leaflet posted thru door and saw a picture of roast duck and the connection between that and the ducks she feeds in the park dawned on her. I don't think she lasted veggie till the next 60 seconds let alone the following meal time. :D

If you really want to put her off the idea of being a veggie i could send you some of my friends home made nut roast. This stuff would have Linda McCartney eating fluffy bunnies :)
  • Lol gotta agree with the nut roast comment. For xmas dinner at school this was the vegetarial offering along with some boiled veg. Put me off nut roast for all time! These is more to vegetarianism than nut roast, boiled vegetables and a green salad.
Just the same as there is more to being a carnivore than just ham, fried chicken and chips.

By the way eating fish is not vegtarian as someone has already mentioned above. A better term would be Pescatarian although if you said I'm a pescatarian most people would say what?! Or is that a new religion?
So it is far easier to say I am a vegatarian who eats fish, which is what I do.

It wasn't meant as a criticism, but if you choose to see it that way I'll say ok it makes you less kind to farmed animals.

I think its great you're supporting her. I've been veggie for the last 16 yrs and my (huge) 13 yr old son has been veggie all his life. He has always loved breakfast cereals (the proper ones not the sugar laden kids ones) and as they all have added iron and vitamins I didn't worry too much, although when he was going through his faddy phases I gave him multivitamins just as a backup.
I found Linda McSausages were great when he was little, lentils, cheese etc. I would be careful with Quorn and only try in small amounts as I do know a few people that can't eat it - it gives them upset stomachs.
