Hoodless Brennan - £5/qtr charge if not used

Options
Looks like Hoodless Brennan charge £5 if you don't trade in a quarter:

Maintence Fee
If you do not trade in the previous quarter you will be charged a maintenance fee of £5 inclusive of VAT.

Can anyone suggest completely no hidden-fees alternative. Selftrade any good? III?

Many thanks,

Carl

  • well i quit Hoodless Brennan after they introduced that rather sneaky change and joined Hargreaves Lansdown. They charge more per trade but no monthly charge, so if you only trade 2/3 times a year, it works out cheaper. HL website's much better too, and HB don't (or didn't) offer ETCs either.

Cheers for the tip. [STRIKE]I was thinking of opening an S&S ISA with H-L next year for funds, so could open it early and put an ETC in. Hmmmmmmm

    Next question would be:

Can I open a mini S&S ISA this year (I already have a cash one) and use it as a maxi S&S ISA next year?[/STRIKE]

Edit - forget that. They have a management fee for shares in an ISA but not most funds.

I think I'll buy my shares seperately. It's only a small amount so I don't think CGT will even come into it.

I can recommend Selftrade - and not because they have a referral scheme where it is possible to get £80 for joining Selftrade (see Selftrade referral thread - my own details are in post 282.. )

They charge £12.50/trade and have no inactivity or annual charges on their dealing accounts (their ISA account does have an annual fee)

    Regards

Yes, the scheme is still going on.

    Yes.. however:

    1) They own 56% of Selftrades parent company so its legally seperate
    2) Investments in nominee accounts are 'ring fenced' anyway so are not considered assets of the stockbroker.
    3) Under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme investments are covered up to £48,000 per person (made up of 100% of the first £30,000 and 90% of the next £20,000)
