Poor fuel economy

I drive a 1999 Ford Focus 1.8 petrol, it has 120K miles on the clock.
I have noticed racently that I seem to be putting an unusual ammount of fuel in the tank compared to a while back, I have calculated the ammount of miles to the gallon I am getting and to my horror it would seem that i am only getting around 23 Miles to the gallon.
I have the car regularly serviced and cannot explain why the excessive use of fuel should occur, ant thoughts would be most welcome

Thanks folks for the replies, I am going to get it checked at the weekend at my local garage who services it.

Change in driving pattern? More shorter journeys from cold?
All the other reasons given are also valid. If you find nothing untoward maybe time to punt it?0
