Does anyone work in an insurance company

Just wondering if anyone who works in an insurance claims department, or has similar experience would have advice.
My family and I are due to go skiing soon. Me, husband, 2 daughters age 15 and 18.
One of them has broken her leg, arm and rib, so she obviously cannot ski.
She really cannot look after herself ie getting up, meals etc.
We have travel insurance and I am going to telephone them this week.
I know that under the terms of the policy we are entitled to all cancel the holiday as one member of the party cannot go.
However, we are considering going without her if we can get a family member who lives up north to stay with her.
Obviously if that happens we will have to pay expenses etc.
Question is if we cancel everyone, it would cost insurance company £4k.
If we just cancel her, it would cost them £1K.
If we ask for additional expenses to pay for her to stay on her own with a family member, do you think insurance company would do this.

this could depend a lot on who you are insured with as different companies have different rules.can you tell us which company it is with and what level of covertrying to lose 3 stone by end of 2014;)0

It really is down to their discretion because I don't think that technically cover would extend to this.
However you are right that it's going to be cheaper and it would be pretty silly for them to turn you down for a cheaper offer.
I would certainly suggest it to them and definitely make sure you get it in writing before you go so that you aren't exposed to losses.
They may want you to clarify what you mean by "expenses" but I am assuming you mean food, petrol and not £500 a day for a carer.0 -
Yes it would only be about £500 for the whole week.0

£500 for what? Is the relative charging you for this?
Fuel and food okay but £500 is stretching things.0 -
Within your policy it should be possible to claim cancellation expenses for individuals, not just the whole party.
So you could claim your daughter's unused portion of the holiday (which should be about £1000 for the travel and accommodation that will not be used) and this can go towards the expenses incurred for her to be looked after.0
