Sma Gold Ready Milk Buying Nightmare!!!

Hi there to everyone, I am new here!!

I have a small problem and wondered if anyone could help??

I have a 7 month old Daughter who was fully breastfeed for 4 months then was having 1 bottle and also breast milk for a further 2 months.
At 6 months old my Daughter and I gave up the breastfeeding together. The 1 bottle that she had been having was from the cartons, ready milk. Now she was going onto formula full time I went and brought the powder.
My Daughter doesn't like it!!!! Trust me we have tried and tried, even using it for powder food, she's not having any of it. so.........
We now have to buy the ready milk cartons, its costing a small fortune 56p each! I have tryed getting the bigger ones to but I cant seem to use them within time, and she like her milk room temp.

Any Advise out there??

Thank you xxx
Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

I work on a SCBU and we regularly send our babies home on Nutri prem 2 in ready made bottles just to help them out.

At the same time we make sure we tell the parents that they will need to mix the ready to feed with the stuff you make up gradually to ensure they will take the powder eventually.

The reason for this is the sterilisation process which the ready to feed milk goes through is different to powder so tastes sweeter and babies need to be weaned onto it gradulay.
I would suggest mixing an ounce at a time of the powder formula to her carton eg if she has 6 oz then mix 5 oz ready to feed to 1 oz powdered feed. and increase it my 1 oz every 2 days so that she is having time to adjust to the new feed.
It is better to do it gradually as to not upset her tummy.

    Hope this helps you

PM me if you need any more info.

Hi- I was going to describe exactly what Lilly's mum has. This is the method my HV told me to do when my eldest changed from formula to cows milk at 12 months. It took 2-3 weeks before he was fully changed.

It does smell quite different to the powdered stuff. I'm always surprised when my children have seemed to like either without telling the difference. It's exactly the same with the red topped SMA progress too.

I agree about mixing it gradually and see how it works out. Good luck!

  • I tried changing DS to the powdered stuff, but he kept throwing it up...and as I liked the convenience of the readymade carton, I didn't pursue it...

However, it may be worth considering changing to the next version up - it comes in cartons of 500ml. The original SMA gold 1litre carton is safe in a fridge for up to 48 hours - how much milk is your little one taking?
