internet radio and Bandwidth

Options
I was told by somebody yesterday that internet radio was heavy bandwidth user.

I always thought that it was not as that was the whole point so you could browse and listen at the same time.

Does anyone know if it is true.

Why not see how much it uses for yourself? see here Leave it running for an hour with nothing else active on your machine e.g. e-mail etc. and check the figures.

    Hi
BBC radio streams are 64 Kilo bits per second.
So one hour would download 22.5 Megabytes of data.
Or 225 Megabytes in 10 hours.
That's not much - unless your contract isn't 'unlimited'.

Thats my point - also, many radio streams are of far far higher quality than that. Also don't forget overheads, and also sending information back (only a small amount.

In your example above of BBC radio, 5 hours a day for 20 days would come to over 2GB, and like I said a lot of streaming radio is at least 128kbs.

It is not a lot - but adds up if you only have a small usage allowence.

I assume this will be a lot worse when using something like the BBC iplayer, something I use quite a lot.

One of the reasons I went for unlimited downloads

That's true, I used BBC as an example.
Some radio stations only stream at 24Kbps and some stream as high as 192Kbps and lots in between.

generally audio and video are very different BW useage.
watching tv on the puter uses a lot of BW.
anyone on limited BW use, needs to be careful using services like this on a very regular basis.
the only good thing about AOL is the unlimited service. (within reason).
