I bought a Provence gas stove at the weekend. When i got it home the starter didn't work, when I manually lit it, it worked fine on settings 2 and 3. However on setting 1 it seemed the flame was finding it difficult to catch (althought it did light, it sounded like a draught was blowing on the flame) and was quite noisy. I brough it back ang got a replacement. When I got this one home, the starter worked fine, however this time only the piolt light ignites on setting 1, while the whole burner lights up fine on setting 2 and 3. When I switch back to setting 1 the burner goes out leaving only the pilot light on. I only want the heater to supplement my central heating so I'm only really looking for a lower heat output. I was wondering what other people have found with this stove. Do you get the burner working on setting 1, if not I think it will use a lot of gas if I can only go down to setting 2!!
Thanks,
sam

hi could you tell me what you think off this heater now. How much gas do you use is and does it create much condensation?
Thanks
It's a nice looking stylish heater, and if you adjust the heat setting you can get around 105hours from 1 15kg Calor Gas Butane Cylinder, yes there may be a little condensation depending on how well your room is ventilated(shouldn't be a problem if your room is well insulated though) but a built in catalytic converter takes the unpleasantries out of the combustion products and protects the environment as well.0 -
Waking this thread up again cos a rel is interested in a portable type catalytic indoor gas heater. I first encountered one in Japan where I was impressed by the total lack of odour compared to things like the indoor parafin heaters of old. Then I realized it was all-digitally regulated (has mains elec supply for this part) and catalytic converter was integral. Even has a timer built in for taking off the morning chill in the Japanese hills where we were.
No feeling of dampness. Now, above posters have mentioned 3-4 pints of water per 8 hours. That would be maybe 1.5 KG water in weight. My bet is that in mild usage the thing is barely using 0.5 kg in fuel weight per night. So how can it adding 2 KG of water to the room?
From the safety viewpoint, I guess that carbon monoxide detection/alarm to a few ppm is built in and one can buy an additional detector for the room if doubtful.
I wonder really, in the UK, how models available in Europe today stack up against the alternative of electric heating? Remembering that storage heaters stay warm when you want it cold and are often exhausted when you want it warm e.g. mid evening - in other words, not a good on-demand solution.0 -
Hi
Having just purchsed one of these fires I am somewhat confused as to whether everyone is talking about the same fire.
The one I purchsed, which looks the same and is called Provence, is certainly NOT one that uses a catalytic convertor. Although there is a glass front all the flames are clearly open to the atmosphere. If the fire was using catalytic technology then the flames would be entirely enclosed and the exhaust gases would be scrubbed prior to being discharged into the room.
With regard to water vapour, no matter what fire you decide to buy water will be one of the byproducts of burning butane.
My sole purpose of posting this note is draw your attention to the fact that the Calor Gas Provence Stove Mobile Heater does NOT have a catalytic convertor.0 -

The FUEL is a HYDROCARBON
That's HYDROGEN (H) and CARBON (C)
WATER is H2O - HYDROGEN (H) and OXYGEN (O)
2 HYDROGEN to each OXYGEN
HYDROGEN is what actually gets burnt to generate the heat.
and just to keep it simple .....
H2O is 18 (EIGHTEEN) times HEAVIER than H
since OXYGEN is 16 times heavier than HYDROGEN
and if you are wondering ......
.... the OXYGEN just appears out of thin air :rotfl:

I've been thinking about buying this stove for ages, and now I've finally done it, as the 2000 litres of oil I ordered 11 days ago still hasn't been delivered and it's likely to snow soon.
the depot it's in is probably under two foot of snow up North but I'm an optimist.0 -
Here is a e-mail reply I got from the makers of the Provence heater:
RE: provence heater:why no catalytic convertor fitted on current models?

Dear Mr Perkins,
Thank you for your e-mail and query.
When first producing the Provence we produced models with and without the catalytic converter fitted. When taking the following points into consideration it was not feasible to continue to supply a model with a Catalytic Converter fitted.
1. The operation of the heater and the emissions of the heater must be the same weather a Cat is fitted or not. This is a European standard requirement and a unit with a Cat fitted will be tested with the Cat removed or neutralised for testing purposes.
2. From an environmental perspective, the Cat will convert the Carbon Monoxide to Carbon Dioxide so it does help to eliminate this dangerous gas however the Carbon Dioxide emissions will remain. It is important to note however that, as a result of point 1, the Carbon monoxide levels are almost non-existant anyway because the heater must pass the emission requirements weather it has Cat fitted or not.
3. The heater is a flueless heater so you benefit from 100% of the heat when you use it. This is unlike a fire with a flue or chimney where you will lose up 85% of the heat. This makes this type of product extremely environmentally efficient. This will be the case weather a Cat is fitted or not.
4. When we produced models with and without Catalytic Converters, the market demand was for the model without Catalytic Converter. We would be happy to produce a model with catalytic converter however at present there is not a market demand that could make it feasible or a cost effective product.
I hope this helps to answer your question, if you have any further queries then please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Kind Regards,
Stewart O'Connell

By contrast, it seems that 100% of Japanese flue-less indoor gas heaters not only have cats fitted, but additionally have timer/temperature controls and a carbon monoxide detector built in.0

well my fire arrived today by courier. It would have been next day delivery but the snow came. It took me an hour to get inside the box & packaging but alas a wheel was broken. It still stands up etc without it and the manufactuers are posting me a repalcement. Haven't assembled the gas bits & coal as hoping my husband will do all that when he comes home from work.
It looks gorgeous! It's really heavy and big and solid.0
