A one with reasonably priced replacement ink cartridges is a must.
Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately I don't know about the ink however argos have one half price at present. My Dad just bought one.

the 4180 is a great printer/copier especially as you can use it as a standalone copier - don't need the pc on - but it's quite expensive on ink. The best option is one that uses seperate ink tanks & these tend to be more expensive to initially purchase. The Canon MP520 has separate tanks - I know Jessops had it for £80 but you can probably find it cheaper elsewhere0

Thanks for the suggestion but I could n't stomach payng about £24 for (compatible) colour and black ink cartridges when I am used to paying £2.50 for my i250!!
Just shows what a rip off these are, the ink is more expensive than Dom Perignon!!{Signature removed by Forum Team - if you are not sure why we have removed your signature please contact the Forum Team}

The compatible cartridges for the Canon MP520 are reasonably priced at £2.49 from my supplier Pheonix. However, there is a price to pay for this, it requires 3 cartridges, black, magenta and cyan. Furthermore it's a bit of a "faff on" to transfer the chips from the originals. Cheapest I could find was about £75, I've a feeling I may be able to get something a little cheaper and more suitable if I'm pateint. Thanks for the idea though.{Signature removed by Forum Team - if you are not sure why we have removed your signature please contact the Forum Team}

I can highly recommend one of the Kodak "easyshare" range, offical replacement inks are black=£6.99 colour=£9.99 or both=£15.99 and pc world often have "buy 2 get 1 free on the ink section" ... i currently have the Kodak 5300 and have been extreamly pleased with the print quality of both photographs and text. I suggest you dont buy a lexmark printer because the replacement inks are expensive. I should also add i have a epson printer/scanner that i often use "compatible cartridges" in IMO photograph quality is awful and should only be used for text.

Thanks for the recommendation I'll take a look when I've got a moment.
I had a Lexmark, got it for a bargain price and then discovered the rip off prices for cartridges! :-(
I also had an epson printer which I liked and cartridges were cheap but that one died on me can't remember the problem now. What model epson do you have and are the cartridges cheap? I only need a printer and scanner but just added the copier bit in as I thought these three always came together.
Thanks{Signature removed by Forum Team - if you are not sure why we have removed your signature please contact the Forum Team}

I'e just ordered one of these:
£35 delivered
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Epson-Stylus...98508&s r=8-1
When the supplied cartridges run out I'll buy a continuous ink system for it:

My trusty Canon died yesterday after 4 years of faithful service, just days after I purchased 16 ink cartridges for it! (just my luck!)0 -

I have the Epson stylus CX3200, yes you can get cheap inks for it"Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone, and do not be troubled about the future, for it has yet to come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering"0 -
Thanks for all the great replies here, I've been off the case a little while.
I liked the inexpensiveness of the Epson CX3200 but of course I'd need to buy a used model and the uncertanties that go with that. I would have bought one off ebay but IMHO they seem to go for more than I'm prepared to pay for a machine with no guarantee. Selling for £18-25. The shipping added to that is also more expensive than buying new from a big supplier.
The next option I'm considering is the buying a used Brother from ebay as Dan suggested and this may be a goer. The other option is go for Uktylers suggestion, the more modern Epson which looks to be very good value and use the continous ink system. The only reservations I have with that is I've tried refiiling cartridges in the past with out success. Having said that, I can't remember the name of the kit but it had a syringe to refil the carts.
I've started a new thead here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=8983501#post8983501 to get some feedback on using continous ink systems.{Signature removed by Forum Team - if you are not sure why we have removed your signature please contact the Forum Team}
