Package holiday to Crete alone?

Options
Hiya!
I want to go and visit a friend of mine who is working in Crete over the summer, but I'm likely to be going alone now that my friend has backed out.
Does this make it impractical to look for a cheap package deal, with the horrible single supplements that are bound to be attached? Does anyone know of any nice (and cheap) companies that don't penalise single people?
Should I be looking for a cheap package deal at all or try and tailor-make my holiday?
Crete is not the cheapest place to get to. Flights alone seem pretty expensive.
I'd like to go August or the beginning of September.

Failing any joy on this - anyone want to come with me?!

    Hi
I very impulsively travelled alone to Crete a few years back and just booked a flight that was leaving the next day. I landed in Heraklioin at about 2 in the morning with nowhere to stay and wondered the streets for a while until I found somewhere to put my head down for the night. This wasn't the best option, but it's reassuring to know that you can turn up somewhere with nowhere to stay and find accommodation at short notice!

For the first week of my stay, I stayed in rooms in houses (about £10-15 per night then), they weren't the cheapest option but were fairly easy to find (I was there for the 1st 3 weeks of September). The best thing I did in the end was to track down a hostle. I'm not sure if this would appeal to you, but it was really cheap and I met loads of other people. The downside is that you'll probably have to share a room with about 4 other strangers, but if this doesn't bother you then its a great experience. Any good travel guide will list the decent hostles in each town, I was in Rethymnon, and should also recommend cheaper pensions (rooms in houses), if you'd prefer that.

Hope this helps a bit. Have a good holiday!
