Driving Licence - How old and so on?

Options
I was speaking to a member of my family who will be 17 at the end of this year.

We were talking about driving licence and when he will be starting ectt and came to a few things i wasnt sure about.

He said that there was this new 'law' put in place that you have to have a years experience in driving before you can have your full licence to drive on your own, but later it was said if you fall after a certain date that you have to/dont have to do that.

Is there anything he can do before his 17th so he can learn as soon as possible when he is 17?

Anything else he should know?

also to add, Im sure some will come accross and start saying how '17 year olds shouldnt be lot on the roads' 'too young' 'nowt carefull' but lets keep it to the questions please.

Many thanks, ill be sure to pass the info on to him.
Things that are free in life are great, well most of the time

The law hasn't changed at 17 he can pass his test and fully drive a car.

He should apply for his provisional licence before his 17th birthday.

And if he wants to start learning on his birthday speak to some driving schools a month before hand.
  • Do a search on Google for "learn to drive at 16".

Depending where you are in the country, there are quite a few driving schools who give lessons to 16 year olds (on private roads, disused runways etc.).

Common sense says this can't be right.

Imagine: You enrol on a week long intensive course in the week after your 17th birthday and pass at the end of it. You have no one who can 'sit with you' so you have to spend the next 51 weeks not driving and can then drive having forgotten everything you learned. Sounds unlikely.
