Upgrading handset of a flats entry system

Does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade just the phone handset part of a secure entry system? I'm not sure if the handset needs to be matched up to the actual buzzer part downstairs, or if you can just fit any handset to the line. The current handset is really old and I'd like to have a silent button on it.
Cheers!
