joinery book

Hi all

Can anybody reccomend a good book for joinery... I want to learn about how to construct stairs for a loft conversion... I have had a look online but cant find anything detailed enough.

    type george ellis into amazon search. well known joinery books.

    I really think you need to know a lot about joinery and construction before you go trying to make a staircase. IMHO they seem to be one of the most difficult things to make and I suspect that manufacturers use CAD type facilities to set them up and make them, where all the calculations on riser sizes and tread width are done for them.
    I'm also surprised you can't find details on the net. I'd have thought there would be American sites with such woodworking details if you can't find UK ones.

    hey thanks for the responses.

    george di cristina seems like a good book.. athougth the ellis book doesnt seem like it contains many illustrations.

    agree entirely. making a staircase is a skilled job.
    best way is to inspect an old staircase in detail to see how its contructed.
    also check the latest gov/building standards on stairs & steps. there are strict regulations for these.

    i agree its a skilled job.....i just like to know how things are constructed especially if i end up paying someone else to do it.

    re the castle, custom made staircase?
    it cost 55000 quid!

    That's because the idiots on grand designs will pay anything, and the tradesmen who they go to know that. Thats my cynical view at least.
