Can DVD players be converted to play multi-region

I have a Sony DVP NS330 - simple DVD player. My player only plays region 2 DVD's. Would like to buy a box set from america (region 1 - not available in europe), can DVd players be converted (legally) to play region 1 DVD's?

Just google "Sony DVP NS330 region hack"

But name brand DVD players like Sony tend to require a special handset so it might be cheaper to buy a cheapo player from Asda all of which are multiregion from the box or can be chabged to multiregion easily
