Internet connection dropping out

Hi can anyone please help?

I'm having continuous problems with my internet connection. Every few minutes it drops out and I have to reconnect. Each time I click to reconnect I get an error code saying no dial tone for about 30 seconds or so until it finally kicks in again. This is becoming increasingly frustrating, especially for the kids when they're playing online games.

I am currently subscribing to the Orange broadband 8 meg service. Apart from the consistent drop outs I'm pretty pleased with the service and am getting pretty good download speeds of around 4 megs. I am connected to the internet via a Thomson Speedtouch 330 ADSL USB modem and have all the filters set up correctly as far as I can see.

This was occurring lots on my old PC which was running XP but I have recently built a brand new high spec PC running Vista and it is still happening. I thought that maybe the modem was faulty so bought a new (identical) one but this has still failed to rectify the problem. I also updated the modem drivers for Vista compatibility but still no joy.

I'm sure this is something very easy to sort out but it has me completely stumped at the moment. Any ideas would be most welcome.

Thanks

After making sure I have micro filters on every connection that's been used I'd unplug everything that uses the phone line and see if that clears the problem. If it does, plug them back in one at a time to see which is the problem. I'd also have the line checked out and any in house extensions. I think it's also possible to over load your line which can cause instability.

how far from the exhange do you live?

If you live a fair distance from the exchange, you may find your connection slow or unusable in poor weather conditions.

I've got wanadoo (orange) broadband and had similar problem today around lunchtime..........not the first time either. Today I eventually switched off then on again and everything has been fine since then (fingers crossed) but it is a nuisance to say the least.

Those usb modems are pretty shoddy, so I'd take a look at that. I'd also take a look at your line stats to see if that sheds any light on the situation.

  • Not much use in this thread, but what the heck, another speed tester with stats of others too, looks like my line is well below average. http://www.skyuser.co.uk/tools/speedtester.php
